The United Nations has backed a move towards using maps that represent Africa closer to its true size. For years, many of us have grown up looking at maps that make Africa appear much smaller than it actually is. The continent didn't suddenly become bigger. The map simply became more honest, and I couldn't help but think: what does that mean for HR?
Because sometimes, I wonder if we have been looking at African talent through a similar lens. We talk about Africa as an "emerging market", a place with skills gaps and talent that needs to be developed. We often look outside the continent for the latest thinking on leadership, workplace culture, talent management and the future of work. There is nothing wrong with learning from the rest of the world, we should. but I think we also need to ask ourselves a different question: what can the rest of the world learn from us?
Africa is not a small player in the future of work. Our talent isn't small. Our ideas aren't small. Our challenges aren't small. And our potential certainly isn't small. Think about the HR professionals working across the continent every day. They are managing incredibly diverse workforces, navigating different cultures and generations, dealing with economic pressures, finding creative ways to attract and retain talent, and helping organisations adapt to a rapidly changing world. There is so much happening that doesn't always make it into the global HR conversation.
And maybe that's part of the problem. Perhaps we haven't always given African HR enough room to tell its own story. We don't need to throw away everything we've learned from global HR, but we do need to recognise that context matters. What works in London might not work in Lagos. What works in New York might not work in Nairobi. What works in one organisation might completely miss the mark in another. African workplaces have their own realities, and those realities have produced some incredibly creative ways of solving problems, leading people and building organisations.
Africa isn't getting bigger. We're finally seeing how big it has always been.
